Reducing the toxic load in our home has been a slow and steady process — but some swaps are so easy (and so much better for us) that I wonder why we didn’t make them sooner.
One of my favourites? Homemade natural wood furniture polish.
Instead of spraying synthetic chemicals and artificial fragrances around our living spaces, I whip up a simple, non-toxic polish using just three everyday ingredients. It’s quick, affordable and it leaves our furniture clean, nourished and smelling beautifully fresh.

Why Switch to Homemade Polish?
Many commercial furniture polishes contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and synthetic fragrances, both of which can contribute to indoor air pollution and may cause respiratory irritation over time.
Switching to a homemade, natural option is an easy way to limit exposure to these chemicals — and it works just as beautifully.
Ingredients:
¼ cup white vinegar
½ cup olive oil
10–15 drops lemon essential oil (I personally use doTERRA for a purer, safer option)
(Note: Adjust the ratios depending on whether you need a deeper clean or a richer polish!)

How to Make It:
Combine all ingredients in a clean glass jar or bottle.
If using a metal lid, place a piece of greaseproof paper under the lid to prevent rusting (vinegar can react with metal over time).
Shake well before each use.

How to Use:
Dip a soft cloth lightly into the polish.
Wipe onto your wood furniture following the grain.
Buff with a clean, dry cloth to finish.

Tips for Success:
- For a deeper clean: Increase the vinegar ratio slightly.
- For a richer polish: Add a little extra olive oil.
- Always do a small patch test first, especially on antiques or delicate finishes.
Why These Ingredients?
- White Vinegar: Cuts through dust, grime and sticky residues.
- Olive Oil: Moisturises and protects the wood naturally.
- Lemon Essential Oil: Provides a fresh, natural scent and brings antibacterial properties.
Storage:
Store your polish in a cool, dark place. Shake before each use as the oil and vinegar will naturally separate.

Final Thoughts:
Simple switches like this remind me that creating a low-toxin, mindful home doesn’t have to be complicated. A few basic ingredients, a little time and a willingness to do things differently can have such a powerful impact — not just on our health but on our daily rhythm too.
Have you tried making your own natural cleaners yet? I’d love to hear what you’ve swapped out!
